Core models spur Honda to 27% gain
American Honda Motor Co. posted the largest increase among volume automakers in August, with sales rising 27 percent to 166,432 vehicles on strong demand for its core products.
Honda Division sales advanced 29 percent to 149,381 units while Acura sales rose 9 percent to 17,051 vehicles.
Sales of the Honda CR-V crossover surged 45 percent to 34,654 vehicles, the nameplate's best month on record, Honda said. Honda's high-volume cars posted strong showings as well, with Accord sales gaining 11 percent to 38,559 units and Civic sales jumping 59 percent to 39,458 units.
"With three of our core models topping 30,000 units and the Honda brand up more than 29 percent, our August sales definitely didn't take a break for the holiday weekend," John Mendel, American Honda's executive vice president of sales, said in a statement. "We're keeping our foot on the gas as we transition into the 2014 model year, including the introduction an all-new Accord Hybrid in October."
Sales of Acura crossovers continued to gain momentum, posting increases large enough to offset the brand's falling car volumes. Deliveries of the MDX mid-sized crossover jumped 17 percent to 6,499 units while RDX compact crossover volume grew 50 percent to 4,381 units.
"More luxury SUV shoppers are choosing the Acura brand than ever before," Jeff Conrad, general manager of Acura sales, said in a statement. "RDX is unstoppable after 16 straight monthly records, and the all-new MDX is already proving it's the one to beat, setting records in its first two full months of sales."
Weak Acura car sales continued as deliveries of the TL and TSX both fell by double-digit percentages, and sales of the entry-level ILX slipped 2 percent.
Dealers sold 459 units of Acura's RLX and RL flagship, a tenfold gain compared with August 2012.
